My daughter has taken ballet and choreography classes at Moving Visions for the last six years. This program is very different from the other option in this neighborhood: there is no glitter or flashy costumes, and everyone knows everyone — it is about as far from a factory as you can get. At the same time it’s not old-fashioned high-pressure perfectionist ballet. Instead Moving Visions is a unique, relaxed little community where kids can really learn discipline and technique, but also where they can develop an appreciation for dance, as well as healthy attitudes toward bodies and movement. The dances that the girls (and a few boys) perform at the end of the year recital are beautiful. In the choreography class they really have an opportunity to do creative work in a supportive environment, and develop something that reflects their own identity. My daughter’s teacher knows each of her students well and is a strong role female model for them. I am truly grateful my daughter has had this be part of her childhood, and I highly recommend it.
Moving Visions encourages all of the beautiful classic ideals of dance: the joy of movement, appreciation of music and creation, and freedom of expression. My daughters have danced in 5 Manhattan studios, Moving Visions is gorgeous and different in its simplicity and focus on classic artistic ideals rather than costumes, makeup and teen music.
