Anna Sokolow Summer Workshop
Taught by Jim May, Artistic Director, Sokolow Theatre Dance Ensemble
This 4-day workshop is based on the style and works of Anna Sokolow.
Mr. May, artistic director of Sokolow Theatre Dance Ensemble and long time associate of Ms. Sokolow, will teach a class based on Sokolow’s movements and style follow by repertory.
Anna Sokolow (1910-2000) is considered to be one of the great choreographers of the 20th Century. She has been dignified as a National treasure, was inducted into the Dance Hall of Fame in Saratoga, NY, and a street in her native New York City has been named Sokolow Way. Sokolow Theatre Dance Ensemble endeavors to continue her artistic vision and genius by reviving Anna Sokolow’s major works as well as premiering new choreography in the realm of dance/theater. The company tours internationally, gives annual concerts in New York, and consists of seaoned Sokolow performers.
JIM MAY, Artistic Director, Choreographer
Jim May has been a dancer on the New York scene for over 40 years. His aim as artistic director of the Sokolow Theatre/Dance Ensemble is to expand the art of dance to include the other arts (music, theater, painting, literature), working toward a progressive new style of theater/dance. Mr. May was a devoted disciple of Anna Sokolow for 35 years and co-artistic director of her dance company, Players’ Project, since 1980. Mr. May, a multi-Fulbright recipient, lectures on Sokolow, reconstructs repertory, conducts workshops worldwide, and teaches in New York City at Peridance. He is the recipient of a 1999 Bessie Award for lifetime achievement, and for a “sustained achievement over decades as dance’s premiere leading man, an actor-dancer of extraordinary range and scope of character, in the living theater of Anna Sokolow”.
